What Water Damage Restoration Costs in Newport News
WaterDamageSource, a pricing site, lists $1,000 to $4,200 for a small clean-water job in Newport News and $12,500 to $31,000 for major flooding. A second site, homeyou, prices one 215-square-foot job at $2,113 to $2,232. Neither explains its method, so treat both as a rough frame, and see what moves a real estimate below.

How much does water damage restoration cost?
Two pricing sites publish Newport News numbers, and they do not agree. WaterDamageSource sorts jobs into three sizes, from $1,000 to $31,000. homeyou's calculator models one job of 215 square feet and lands near $2,200. Neither page explains where its figures come from, which is why neither appears in this page's title and why both sit in the table above with their limits spelled out.
What the two agree on is shape. Small, clean leaks caught early sit at the bottom of any range. Flood water, sewage and anything that has had time to grow mold sit at the top. The rest of this page is about why.
What drives the bill
The category of water
Restorers classify water by contamination. A burst supply line is clean water and can often be dried in place. Water from a washing machine or dishwasher carries soap and food waste. Sewage and flood water are the worst class, and porous materials they touch generally come out. WaterDamageSource ranks them the same way on its pricing page: clean water cheapest, black water most expensive.
How far it spread
Square footage drives labor and equipment. Water runs under baseboards, wicks up drywall and spreads across subfloors well beyond the visible puddle, which is why a moisture meter comes out before the price does. homeyou's calculator works out to about $11 a square foot for its sample job.
What got wet
Tile on a slab dries. Carpet pad, insulation and the lower part of soaked drywall are usually replaced. Hardwood, cabinets and plaster each take their own approach, and some of it cannot be saved. The more material that has to be cut out, the larger both halves of the bill get. The EPA's flooded homes guide shows how walls and floors are opened up and why everything must be dry before they are closed again.
How long it sat
Past the first day or two, the EPA's moisture guide expects mold, and that adds a second job to the estimate: WaterDamageSource lists mold remediation in Newport News as its own range, $2,100 to $15,500. Our mold remediation page covers that work.
Where it is
A crawl space, an attic or a finished basement costs more to work in than an open kitchen. Many Peninsula houses sit on crawl spaces, and water that ponds under a floor is slow and awkward to reach. The CDC's guide to re-entering a flooded home notes that crawl spaces need drainage and ventilation to dry out.
Mitigation and repair: two parts of the estimate
A water damage estimate usually splits in two. The mitigation half is extraction, tear-out and the drying equipment with the days it runs, backed by moisture readings that show when it is done. The repair half covers drywall, paint, flooring and trim. Some companies do both, and some hand the rebuild to a builder. Ask which you are being quoted for. Our main water damage restoration in Newport News page describes the mitigation work step by step.
What insurance changes
A covered claim is paid under your policy's terms, with your deductible coming off the top, and the insurer may review each line of the estimate. Virginia's insurance code separates ordinary water damage from flood in ยง 38.2-112, and FEMA says most homeowners policies do not cover flood. Water from a tidal flood with no flood policy is paid out of pocket. Our Virginia water damage insurance page goes through the split.
For scale only: the Insurance Information Institute reports that homeowners insurers paid an average of $15,400 per water damage and freezing claim from 2019 to 2023. That is a national average across every claim size, not a Newport News price.
Reading an estimate before you sign
- Line items for extraction, each piece of equipment and the number of days, tear-out by material and square footage, disinfection if the water was dirty.
- A moisture map at the start and another at the finish. Drying equipment billed by the day should end when the readings say dry.
- A plain statement of what is left out. Mold, contents and rebuild are often separate. Ask.
- Sensible payment terms. FEMA's FloodSmart guidance warns that a service demanding full payment before starting may be a scam, and advises talking to your insurer before signing.
Virginia licenses contractors through its Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation, which keeps a public lookup. Check the name on any estimate there before work starts.
Water damage repair cost after the drying
Rebuild pricing follows the materials: drywall and paint are cheaper than hardwood and cabinetry, and matching an older finish can cost more than replacing a whole room. A photo of every opened wall before it is closed back up is worth having, both for the insurer and for the next buyer. The City of Newport News flood page is worth reading before rebuilding in a flood-prone spot, since rebuilding the same way can mean paying twice.
Cost questions people ask before the estimate
How long does restoration take after water damage?
The drying usually takes days and the repairs take longer, and neither can be rushed without leaving moisture in the walls. The EPA's 24 to 48 hour window is about when drying has to start, not how long it runs. A contractor should show you moisture readings before rebuilding begins.
What is the difference between water damage remediation and restoration?
In estimates, mitigation or remediation is the emergency part (extraction, tear-out and drying) and restoration or repair is putting the house back. They often come as separate bills, and your insurer may approve them separately too.
How much does water damage devalue a house?
We found no reliable figure for that and give none. What a buyer and an inspector look for is evidence that the water was dried out properly, so keep the moisture readings, photos and invoices. Mold found later is the bigger worry, which is why the mold remediation page stresses drying.
Is a water damage estimate free?
WaterDamageSource says an inspection or assessment is often free in Newport News. Sending a request here costs nothing either, and the services page shows the kinds of job it covers. A written estimate should list each line of work so it can be compared with another.
How much does water damage restoration cost in Newport News?
The two published Newport News sources we read disagree, from about $2,100 for a modelled small room to $31,000 for major flooding. Where your job lands depends on the water category, the area, the materials and how long it sat. The City's flood page explains why flood water here is often the costliest kind.
